From the second I heard his voice on, “The Bird” come through on my headphones, I was instantly in love.
Anderson .Paak’s album, “Malibu” was like nothing I’d ever heard—I still don’t know how to describe what I heard beyond my reactionary, “Yes LAWD! As an added bonus, his speaking voice is the same as his singing voice so his concerts are true to sound as he performs with so much energy it makes you tired.
I had been in the Radio City Music Hall dressing room for all of 15 minutes preparing to film Dave Chappelle's residency to celebrate his 30 years in comedy when I heard someone say, “ Ayo, A.P is about to be up for soundcheck.” 😳 Anderson .Paak wasn't even listed in the line-up and I had ZERO idea he was performing. I thought I was going to cry with true fan girl tears. I did everything I could to hide my geeky grin behind my camera and reminded myself I was there to do a job…. film.
In my mind, what I’d experience next, would be my own private concert as I watched Anderson sip tea and workout the transitions for his song selections during soundcheck while the Roots effortlessly provided the perfect soulful background.
